What Is a POS Cash Register?

A cash register is a standard piece of equipment in any retail or foodservice operation. The first true cash register was invented in 1879 by saloon owner James Ritty. The Ritty model cash register became the basis for cash registers used around the world. Though cash registers became motorized and even computerized, for more than a century it was more-or-less the same idea. The cash register allowed cashiers to total sales, make change, take money and keep it safe. Watch the video below as Tim breaks down what a POS cash register is and the usefulness of POS systems for business.

What Is a POS Cash Register?

A point of sale system, or POS, is an often touch-screen system that allows users to total sales, track inventory, run reports, manage sales, create menus, communicate orders to the kitchen print barcodes, manage customer relationships, track rewards and discounts, automate tasks, control marketing, analyze data and much more. A point of sale system combined with a POS cash register features all of the benefits of a POS system.

In short, the modern POS cash register has come a long way from the original version of Ritty’s Incorruptible Cashier.

Its Features

Different businesses have different requirements. For example, a thrift shop won’t necessarily need the same features as a restaurant. Neither will have the exact needs as a traditional retail establishment. Even within styles of restaurants requirements can be very different. Various business types may be very different or only slightly different in their requirements.

Some restaurants have small retail shops attached and some stores offer food service. Restaurants may also have different styles of service like fine dining, table service, quick service, fast-casual or delivery. One store might be a single operation while another may be part of a chain. Bepoz is aware of all of the unique needs of these businesses and is able to adapt as is required.

Examples of Different Types of POS Systems

A quick-serve restaurant needs POS cash registers that are quick and easy. The cashier will use a POS cash register touch screen to place the order, send it to the kitchen and total the order amount at once. The POS system also works behind the scenes. It automatically removes the items ordered from inventory and reduces them as they are sold so the kitchen always knows what is in stock and what needs to be reordered.

Table service operates in a similar manner. The exception is instead of performing the transaction in a single process, the table or tab has to be managed over multiple encounters. There could be an initial round of drinks appetizers, salads, entrees, desserts that all need to run through the POS cash register or mobile tablet.

Retail and thrift stores might need even more features. They may need to scan barcodes that are programmed with special discounts. They can even be programmed to track which cashier is using the device for added security.

These are just a few examples of differences that exist between different systems and different business types. Are you still asking, what is a POS cash register? If you want to know more about POS cash registers, and how Bepoz can help you, then give us a call today!

Video Transcript

Hey, this is Tim with Bepoz Enterprise Point of Sale Systems. In this video, we’re going to answer the question: what is a POS cash register?

So first, it’s important to understand that there are point of sale systems, and there are cash registers. Cash registers are the systems that have been around for 100 years, that have been running cash transactions forever. And point of sale systems are typically systems that are run on a computer, likely and most often or oftentimes, with a touchscreen. And a POS cash register is a point of sale system that is replacing, probably a cash register, right?

How Can a POS Cash Register Help My Business?

So a point of sale system can do many things for your organization. And it depends on what kind of business you have. If you’re food and beverage, it might have some functions. If you’re doing retail, it might have others. We’ll try to cover the broad overview strokes of different things that point of sale could do for your operation in this video.

So if you have a food and beverage operation, of course, you might have quick service and be able to walk up to the counter and the cashier could take your order, and with the touchscreen ring up your order, which will print to a kitchen or display on a kitchen display screen. If you’re in a table service restaurant, the waiter might take the order at your tableside or might take your order that you gave them, and handwrite it and bring it back to the system and ring it up, again printing it to the kitchen display or kitchen printer.

How Does the POS Cash Register Work in a Business?

In a retail organization or operation, you’d be scanning barcodes, and ringing up transactions by scanning barcodes. But you could use a touchscreen oftentimes to ring out products as well. And then those systems have lots of different things that they can give to you after you’ve gotten through those basic steps. Those point of sale systems could be tracking inventory, could be securing your cash, helping you make sure your cashiers and your employees are honest, locking down functions so that they can’t steal from you, making sure they’re not stealing inventory, giving reporting on the backend and showing you what has happened, running loyalty systems, and helping you do rewards, and helping you incentivize customers come back, helping you do reporting and finding out what the best customers you have are, and all sorts of other functions. They could be tracking discounts, and scheduling promotions, and having discounts that operate on a specific schedule. So during July 4th, these products are going to be on special for you.

So there’s many different things that a POS cash register could do for your operation and many more that I haven’t even listed.
